QFX is the file type used by Quicken's Web Connect workflow. If your bank provides a Quicken download, use that first: it contains institution details supplied by the bank. A QFX generated from a PDF can help prepare older statement data, but the extension alone does not establish compatibility with your Quicken account.
Check compatibility before converting
Our current QFX export describes the account as CHECKING. It includes institution fields with a default identifier of 00000, rather than a verified identifier for your bank. Quicken may reject that information. The export is not a dedicated credit card, investment, or multi-account format, and there is no institution-selector control in the converter.
Do not change the identifier to an unrelated bank merely to get past an error. Confirm the supported workflow for your bank and Quicken edition first. The import steps below describe Quicken Classic for Windows; other editions can differ.
Create a QFX download
- Open the PDF to QFX tool and upload an unlocked bank statement PDF of up to 25 MB.
- Select Convert My Statement.
- Download Excel and check the account, currency, dates, and transaction amounts against the original.
- Open More formats and choose QFX under Accounting.
- Keep the PDF and review workbook alongside the downloaded .qfx file.
The QFX is generated from the original extracted data. Editing the downloaded Excel workbook does not update a later QFX download. If extraction is incorrect, contact us before using that export.
Understand what the file contains
The export includes posted dates, signed transaction amounts, an account identifier, statement currency, closing balance, descriptions, and generated FITIDs. Positive credits become positive amounts; positive debits become negative amounts. Short payee names are limited to 32 characters and memos to 255, so retain the PDF for complete descriptions.
Missing metadata can produce defaults, including USD currency, a placeholder account number, a zero closing balance, or a 1970 date. Check the review workbook for missing fields before trying an import; a syntactically complete file does not mean those details were present in the statement.
Import and review in Quicken
Back up your Quicken data file before testing an unfamiliar import. In Classic for Windows, choose File → File Import → Web Connect File, select the QFX, and confirm the intended account if Quicken accepts it. Review the resulting register and compare the date range, amounts, and balance with the statement. Follow Quicken's official import instructions for the current workflow and edition-specific options.
If an institution or account error appears, keep the exact message. Try a bank-issued Web Connect file to establish whether that account supports the workflow. A generated file with placeholder institution information may need a different supported import route; repeatedly uploading it or renaming OFX to QFX does not resolve its contents.
Prevent duplicate entries
The generated FITID depends on extracted values and row position. Reordered rows, changed descriptions, or overlapping PDFs can produce different identifiers for the same real transaction. Check the destination for an earlier successful import before retrying, and compare matching suggestions carefully.
For an editable review table, use the CSV guide. If you meant QuickBooks rather than Quicken, use the separate QBO guide.
